⏰ The 16:00 seaplane cutoff

Seaplanes stop around 16:00. Land late and you'll stay at an airport hotel and fly out next morning β€” an extra night and transfer. Speedboat resorts run later, but last boats are still early evening.

Speedboat

The workhorse for North and South MalΓ© Atoll resorts and for Maafushi and nearby local islands. Fast, frequent and scenic. Resorts arrange it; you pay per person or per boat.

  • 20–60 minutes from the airport
  • Runs later than seaplanes
  • No weight limits like seaplanes

Seaplane

The classic Maldives arrival β€” a low flight over atolls to a floating pontoon. Used by resorts in Baa, Ari, Lhaviyani and other mid-distance atolls. Check-in closes early, so book an early arrival flight.

  • 25–60 minutes, unforgettable views
  • Cutoff around 16:00
  • Baggage limits apply

Public ferry & local transport

The budget route to local islands like Maafushi, Thulusdhoo and Dhiffushi. Slow, scheduled, cheap β€” and a real slice of Maldivian life. Combine with a speedboat when the ferry times don't suit.

  • β‚Ή500–2,000 per person
  • Fixed schedules, plan around them
  • Great for backpackers and budget families

Transfer tips

Pack for the transfer

Seaplanes limit luggage. Keep swimwear and essentials in a small carry-on for the first few hours.

Plan the first night

If you land after 16:00, budget an airport-hotel night. Resorts can arrange it with your transfer.

Weather delays happen

Seaplanes and speedboats pause in rough weather. Build slack into your return-flight timing.
