Maldives packing list & etiquette
An Islamic country where resorts are a bubble and local islands are not. Pack for the sun, the reef and the culture — and leave alcohol and vapes at home.

- Reef-safe sunscreen — oxybenzone/octinoxate-free; many reefs and resorts restrict harmful sunscreens
- Rash guard / long-sleeve swim top — Indian skin + strong sun; also modest on local islands
- Snorkel set — house reefs are best at dawn; bring your own mask for fit and hygiene
- Modest cover-ups — for Male and local islands: shoulders and knees covered outside the beach
- Light cotton clothing — humid all year; quick-dry fabrics win
- Flip-flops + water shoes — reefs and jetties are sharp
What NOT to bring
🚫 Alcohol & vapes
Do not pack alcohol, e-cigarettes or vapes to bring in. Duty-free alcohol bought at Indian airports is typically bonded — held at Male and returned on your exit. Resorts sell alcohol; local islands are dry.
🚫 Harmful sunscreen
Sunscreens with oxybenzone and octinoxate are banned in some protected areas and frowned on at resorts. Bring reef-safe (mineral) sunscreen to protect the coral you came to see.
Etiquette & culture
The Maldives is a Muslim country. Resorts are private bubbles; inhabited islands are not.
On local islands
- Dress modestly outside the designated "bikini beach"
- No alcohol, no pork — respect the dry island rules
- Ask before photographing people
- Friday prayers mean quieter mornings
Practicalities
- SIM: buy a Dhiraagu or Ooredoo tourist SIM at MLE — cheaper and more reliable than roaming
- Cash: carry some USD for tips and local-island extras; cards work at resorts
- Water: resorts filter or bottle; on local islands use refillable bottles to cut plastic
Modest resort wear
Resorts are relaxed, but a light cover-up for walks between pool and restaurant is normal. Many Indian families pack a knee-length dress or cotton salwar for evenings.
