Maldives, planned for Indian travellers

Can you go, and what does it cost in rupees? That's what we answer first — then the villas, atolls and sandbanks. Free 30-day visa on arrival, IMUGA in 96 hours, and flights under 4 hours from most Indian cities.

City first, not "from India"

Start from your city

Direct flights, typical timings and package ballparks from the Indian cities that fly to Male (MLE) most often.

One destination, two products

Pick your trip type

Honeymoon, family or budget local islands — the right stay depends on who's travelling and what you expect.

The two questions that matter

Can I go, and what will it cost?

Visa is free — IMUGA is not optional

Indian passports get a free 30-day visa on arrival. But every passenger must file the IMUGA Traveller Declaration within 96 hours before arrival — at imuga.immigration.gov.mv. Beware paid scam sites.

Flights are shorter than you think

Kochi–MLE is about 1.5–2 hrs; Bengaluru 2–2.5 hrs; Mumbai 2.5–3.5 hrs; Delhi 4–4.5 hrs. Maldives time is 30 minutes behind IST — plan transfers accordingly.

Room rate ≠ what you pay

Add TGST ~16%, service charge ~10%, Green Tax (US$3–6 pp/night), transfers and meals. Our all-in calculator shows the real number in rupees.

When to go — aligned to Indian calendars

Nov–Apr is dry and calm (and pricey). May–Oct brings showers but better manta windows and lower rates. The value pitch is late April and early November.

Resorts vs local islands

Two Maldives, one booking

Many first-timers don't realise the difference until they land on a dry island. Decide before you pay.

Planner first, brochure second

Build your trip in six steps

  1. Check visa & IMUGA

Free 30-day visa on arrival. File IMUGA 96 hours before landing. Keep a confirmed return ticket and a prepaid booking at a registered property.

  2. Pick flights from your city

Compare direct routes from Kochi, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Chennai and Delhi. Aim to land before 16:00 if you want a seaplane that day.

  3. Set an all-in budget in INR

Use the calculator to fold in TGST, service charge, green tax, transfers and meals — not just the "from US$199" rate.

  4. Choose resort vs local island

Honeymoon? Resort. Budget beach week? Maafushi guesthouse. Diver? Liveaboard or a house-reef resort.

  5. Sort transfers & meals

Speedboat, seaplane, domestic flight or public ferry — each changes your first-day plan and your bill.

  6. Pack for the sun and the culture

Reef-safe sunscreen, rash guard, modest cover-ups for Male and local islands. No alcohol or vapes in your bag.

Maldives from India: the honest short version

Indian travellers don't need an embassy visa for the Maldives: you get a free 30-day visa on arrival at Velana International Airport (MLE). The paperwork that actually matters is the IMUGA Traveller Declaration, filed online within 96 hours before arrival — it's free, official at imuga.immigration.gov.mv, and every passenger including children must have one. Immigration also wants a confirmed return ticket and prepaid accommodation at a registered resort, hotel or guesthouse.

The Maldives is closer than most people think: Kochi and Trivandrum are barely 1.5–2 hours away, Bengaluru about 2–2.5, Mumbai 2.5–3.5, Chennai 3–3.5, and Delhi 4–4.5. Flight-only returns typically cost ₹10,000–35,000 depending on the city and season. A 3-night budget trip staying on a local island like Maafushi can start around ₹50,000–70,000 land-only; mid-range resort packages usually run ₹1–2 lakh and up; overwater villa weeks cost considerably more. Budgets must include TGST (~16%) and service charge (~10%), a Green Tax of roughly US$3–6 per person per night, transfers, and meals.

No COVID tests are required, and a yellow fever certificate is only needed if you arrive from a risk country. Passports need at least 1 month validity officially — but many airlines enforce 6 months, so renew early if in doubt.

Indian food, settled

Resorts increasingly run Indian counters with dosas, paneer and — at properties like Atmosphere Kanifushi — a fully vegetarian "Just Veg" restaurant. Local islands are more limited unless you request veg at booking. Diwali, Christmas–New Year and school breaks run peak prices; late April and early November are the value windows.
